Pop Art Proposes To Fashion

Last week I visited S*uce Gifts in Dubai to support my girl pop artist Maria Iqbal at a special event. In addition to her furniture and design, Maria now has a line of custom made clutches. Everything from Bambi to the UAE flag and comic book heroines inspire the range. I hung out at S*uce Gifts and watched as my very own clutch came to life.

If you didn’t catch my interview with Maria Iqbal a while back, here is an excerpt:

Maria Iqbal is the funniest person I’ve met in a very long time. Her brain clicks away like a slide projector, constantly changing topics, each one more amusing and wild than the next. When I ask her if there is a color she’s drawn to right now, she goes off on a tangent about green—the color of youth, Islam, and tropical jungles. She is already imagining a green handbag and a verdant chair, maybe something with a tail or spots. Her eyeliner is meticulous and her long black hair is glossy. She’s actually flat out gorgeous, but her imagination is so glittery-bright that she hides behind it and claims she isn’t seduced by Dubai’s social scene and actually, “can’t wait to be an old lady and join book clubs, go on cruises with my girls, and have an excuse to stay home at night and knit.”

You can read the rest here.

The clutches were all hand made by Maria and guests got to pick color schemes and wording exactly as they wanted, which was endlessly fun.

Once I chose a clutch, Maria began to customize it according to my wishes. The heroine’s hair went from white to bombshell blonde, to mousy brown, and finally a rich brunette.

A few days later after the paint and varnish were dried, Maria brought over the finished clutch. I had it customized with my husband’s name and surprised him. I have a bit of a Southern drawl and when I’m delighted by him or scolding him, I always say “Oh Jeffrey” and drag it out to about 10 syllables. I can’t wait to take the clutch to dinner parties in Paris over the holidays.

You can order your own clutch at S*uce Gifts. They aren’t cheap (note: I gladly paid for mine. It was not swag!), but they are more than reasonable for an original work of art. Think of it as your very own portable painting.

Good Idea: Visit S*auce Gifts here and follow Maria Iqbal’s adventures here.
